Knowledge is power.
The only way a person can know if she or he is HIV positive or HCV positive
is by taking a test. Before the test is given, staff provides
information about the test and risk behaviors. A brief risk assessment
is conducted and a small amount of demographic information is collected.
MCAVN now provides
a variety of testing options for persons with high risk behaviors: men
who have sex with men, injecting drug users and sexual and needle sharing
partners of these risk behaviors. The HIV rapid testing is an oral test
with results in about 20 minutes. The other HIV oral test goes
to the lab and returns in about two weeks. The HCV test is a finger
poke with a drop of blood. Results are returned in about 2 weeks.
